Rayne Tunley, Artist's Statement
My maternal ancestors were potters, crafts-people, musicians and
painters who shared their love of the arts. Out of this heritage I began to
draw and paint. Now, through my own dedication, art is a continuum which
parallels my life and history. Having had the opportunity to travel
extensively, I have seen sky, land and sea as constant but unique components,
whatever their moods. I am always amazed, at the same time, to see them meet
and create a unified whole. Could I help but react artistically?
Nature, possibly my best teacher, has intrigued me with her
landforms, which demand love, respect and awe. I would hope that, through my
paintings, people will be reminded of the importance and value of maintaining
the health and beauty of our planet. My paintings primarily express my feelings
for the land – the contours, moods and colours in them invite the viewer
to participate and to create a personal imagery.
Art is born out of the
encounter.
My challenge is to intensify what I have learned and to look
deeper, with an open mind, prepared to accept what is unpredictable and
unknown. My direction? To be able to take risks – touch the edge of
my experience and push beyond. I firmly believe that this is what all growth is
about.
